Is AI generated documentation any good?
AI-generated cybersecurity documentation is of limited value. While generative AI platforms can quickly produce templates, policies and control mappings that appear well-structured and professional, AI-generated documentation is often filled it errors, omission and other inaccuracies.
Cybersecurity documentation must be accurate, aligned to business processes and tailored to specific regulatory frameworks. These are all areas where generative AI still falls short without human oversight. Any documentation template must be customized, role-based and integrated into the organization’s risk management strategy, something AI alone cannot reliably produce.
Out-of-the-box AI-generated policies often lack the depth, specificity and legal defensibility required for audits, particularly for frameworks like NIST 800-171, CMMC, or ISO 27001. AI models may also mix terminology across frameworks or fail to reflect an organization’s actual operational practices, leading to non-implementable or misleading documentation. This can create audit gaps or legal exposure.
